ICC MENS T20 WORLD CUP 2028 NEW FORMAT, 20 TEAMS, NEW SUPER 20 STAGE ADDED



The ICC has confirmed the format for the T20 World Cup 2028. Contrary to reports, It will remain a 20-team event but with a major structural revamp, including a new "Super 10" stage. 


Australia and New Zealand will co-host the tournament.

   Format.      5 Groups → Super 10 → Eliminators → Semi-finals → Final


   2. THE NEW 2028 FORMAT EXPLAINED 

This replaces the Super 8 stage used in 2024 and 2026.

         Stage 1: Group Stage

1.  20 teams split into 5 groups of 4 teams
2.  Each team plays 3 matches
3.  30 group-stage matches - reduced from 40 in 2024
4. Top 2 teams from each group qualify = 10 teams advance

              Stage 2: Super 10

This is the biggest change.
1. 10 teams split into 2 groups of 5 teams
2. Each team plays 4 matches
3. 20 Super 10 matches
4. Group Winner of each group → Direct qualification to Semi-finals
5. Group 2nd place vs Opposite Group 3rd place → Eliminator match

               Stage 3: Knockouts

1. 2 Eliminator matches
2. 2 Semi-finals
3.  Final

  3. WHY ICC MADE THIS CHANGE

1. More Competitive Games: 4-team groups reduce one-sided matches

2. Higher Stakes: Super 10 + Eliminators means more pressure games

3. Broadcast Value: Extra knockout-style games increase commercial value

4. Retain 20 Teams: ICC wants to keep giving Associates opportunity without making the tournament too long

4. QUALIFICATION: 12 TEAMS ALREADY QUALIFIED 

1.    Hosts: Australia, New Zealand

2. Top 7 from 2026 T20 World Cup Super 8: India, England, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe

3. Next best in ICC T20I Rankings as of 9 March 2026: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland

Remaining 8 spots: To be decided through Regional Qualifiers in 2027.

                       5. VENUES 

Australia: MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval, Optus Stadium  
New Zealand: Eden Park, Sky Stadium, Hagley Oval


                     

                WICKETGLOW VERDICT

ICC chose quality over quantity. Instead of 24 teams, they kept 20 but made every game matter more. The Super 10 + Eliminators format means teams can’t afford one bad game. 

Expect high-scoring games in Australia and NZ conditions. This could be the most competitive T20 World Cup yet.
